The grade one's have been learning about all the ways to keep our bodies happy and healthy! Today we explored Canada's New Food Guide and learned that in order to do all the fun things we love doing, such as running, jumping, playing with friends and participating in phys-ed, we need to keep our body fueled with a balanced diet. The kiddos identifiied with the metaphor that our bodies are like a car. In order for a car to take people from place to place, it needs gas. When the car runs our of gas, it does not want to move and someone needs to fill it back up! Just like a vehicle, our bodies need fuel to grow and have energy to do the things we love. To further understand healthy eating, we dove into exploring the good groups- Fruits and Vegtables, Protein and Whole Grain Products. Each kiddo was given a food (printed on paper) and we went around discussing where it belonged and why- judging by how it is made. We also discussed one more food group- "Sweets and Treats." These are sometimes foods that are okay to have once or twice a week. This type of food sucks up your energy and can make you feel ill. Look at all those happy and healthy bodies!! The kiddos were proud of their new knowledge and were set free to practice this sorting skill on their own in their healthy bodies booklet. I encourage everyone to sit down with their kiddo this week and explore the Canada Food Guide further. There are some great tips and tricks about healthy eating and having a healthy relationship with food in the website button below. One of these ways is eating together as a family and making healthy snacks that taste great. Check it out!!
