We went all around the world in just 2 days this week! From Brazil to The Netherlands, we expereienced the many gifts and treasures that make our world and the Riverheights community so great. The amount of work and effort that went into each pavillion was truly astonishing. Check out the pictures below to see a sneak peak of the past few days: Opening Ceramonies: Mrs. Hunter hosted an array of dancers who expressed their traditional dance and music. We were so lucky to have both RH talent, as well as professional Irish dancers perform for us. After a short break, we begin our tour around the school. First Stop, Canada! Here we learned about everything that makes us Canadian. From maple syrup, to hockey and re-building the CN Tower with marshmellows and tooth picks, we enjoyed our trip! Next we headed over to South Africa: What a treat it was to learn about the landscape, traditions and animals who live in South Africa. One student held a live demonstration on diamond mining! Our next destination: Greece! We toured the streets of Greece, viewing beautiful artifacts that are all original to the country. We enjoyed an informative presentation on Greek Mythology and other facts about Greece. Before taking flight, once again, the kiddos snacked on some Galaktoboureko. Off to Brazil we go! In Brazil, our grade one kiddos took some serious note on how to rock Brazil from our Big Buddies class! We watched the Gr. 3s awesome slide show and were taught the Samba. Home made brigadeiro was the fuel to our dance party!! Next stop: The Netherlands. The grade 2s put on a fantastic pavillion with lots to look at and do! The kiddos tried their artistic hand at the Starry Night, walked through a tulip garden and played the hilarious game of "Spijkerpoepen!" Check out the slideshow below to see the rest of Cultural Day! We visited many more pavillions such as: The Phillipes, Nepal and India. The show will also include photos of our grade one's doing a wonderful job of hosting Brazil to over 10 groups!

Riverheights Cultural Day is next week already! In preparation, we have begun wondering about the people, land and food that make up the beautiful country of Brazil. Yesterday we dove head first into this exploration by looking at photos on the internet. Famous landmarks, people and festivals were among the many bold and vibrant photos that we discovered. Today the kiddos were surprised to enter a classroom that was filled with artifacts that resembled and symbolized those of Brazil. This brought great wonder and discussion as the kiddos navigated the room. Luckily we have a special friend in our classroom who moved from Brazil this school year! He has been a great help in answering our questions. He has even taught us a few words in Portegeuse!! Football Center: Brazil is known for its strong love of "football" or as we know it- soccer (This was a popular fact among the kids today!). At this center, partners can challenge each other to a game of tilt football by trying to see how many times they can control the ball back and forth before the timer runs out! Golden Rice Sensory Box: This sensory box is filled with "gold" and white rice. Both rice and gold can be commonly found in Brazil. Rice can be found as a side in some Brazilian dishes and Brazil's gold rush created the world's longest gold rush period and larfest gold mines in South America at one point in time! Added to this sensory box is measuring cups and a bowl for some added measurement exploration. Coffee Transfering Center: Brazilian coffee production is responsible for about a third of all coffee- which makes Brazil one of the world's largest producers in the world! At this center, the kiddos engage with ground coffee with a fine motor task to transfer the coffee from one bowl to anther. Carnival Hats: A Brazilian celebration called Carnival is held annually and begins thee Friday before Ash Wednesday. It is one of the most famous Brazilian holidays that holds days of dancing, costume and singing. At this center, the kiddos engage with feathers, a material that is commonly found on Brazilian costume during carnival and can explore moking hats! Carnival Jewlery: Right beside the hat center, we have the carnival jewlery center where the kiddo can explore making brightly colored carnival jewlery! We have discussed that people in Brazil do not wear these beautiful outfits everyday but rather just important and special festivals such as Carnival! Flags with Loose Parts: We have been learning all about Brazil's flag and the meaning behind it. Here the kiddos are invited to replicate the flag using loose parts that consist of marker lids, gems and other parts. The green on Brazil's is symbolic of thier lush fields and forests. The yellow diamond symbolizes Brazil's wealth in gold and in its center the blue globe respresents the starry skies. Currently there are 27 stars that represent their 27 states. Art Center: Our art center is feature Brazilian artist Romero Britto. He is a pop artist who uses bold, vibrant and happy colors to reflect his postitive outlook on life. On his website, it states that he is a self-taught artist who created art on anything that he could find as a child, including cardboard boxes and newspaper. Here the kiddos are invited to create thier own art using cardboard boxes, paint and sharpies. I cant wait to see their creations!
Dear Parents,
On Thursday May 9th the Cultural Ambassadors are having an Ice Cream Sundae Sale at lunch time. The cost of each Ice Cream Sundae is $2.00. The proceeds of the sale will go towards the Riverheights Cultural Days; which are happening on May 21st and 22nd. Thank you for your support! On that note, our class, along with Mrs. Conroy's Grade 3 class, will be hosting BRAZIL for Riverheights Cultural Days on May 21 and 22! We are looking for decorations so we can transform our classroom into a Brazilian carnival! Such items can include: brightly colored flowers, plants, “fake” palm trees, beach towels, colorful umbrellas, feathers, yellow/blue/green streamers and tablecloths, and anything else you can think of! You can google “Brazilian theme party” to get an idea of what we’re looking for! Please send anything you may have to school by Wed. May 15th so we can begin decorating! I will send all items back home after Cultural Day is over unless you let me know you don’t need it back. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks so much, Ms. Kajati |
