Our field trip to Riverheights Terrace was one for the books! As we walked up to the building, the kiddos were amazed at how beautiful the structure was. Some thought we were going into a castle! Once we arrived, we were greeted by many friendly faces who welcomed us with care. In lieu of green and red day, we brought red and green balloons to play with the residents in the atrium. With the tall ceiling, this activity almost seemed magical as the kiddos played with their new friends. Next we went to the activity room to make a Christmas craft out of foam art and read books! The kiddos enjoyed conversing with their new friends. One of the residents shared they had a birthday coming up this week. He would be 99 years old! It was so much fun to watch the kiddos ask great questions and listen to the their stories. Just before we got ready to leave, our friends asked us if we wanted to meet a dancing Santa!! Of course, we accepted this offer and the kind owners of Santa, lead us to the room and we watched him perform a few songs. The kids were amazed!!! The kiddos spoke about the field trip all day, reminiscing about their favorite parts and speaking about the new friends we made. We cannot wait to return next time to see everyone again.
A huge thanks to Riverheights Terrace for hosting us and filling our hearts with some Christmas joy. Merry Christmas to you!

The kiddos have recently gained deep interest in bones and the skeletal system! This interest was brought about from the GoNoodle (movement app we use daily) song called "Bones!" Essentially it is a dancing skeleton that dances and names off all the different bones in our body. The kiddos LOVE this song and it has completely flooded our room with questions. One of the questions that have come up are: - Do bones have blood? - Why dont skeletons have eyes? - Do bigger people have more bones? - Why dont skeletons have hair? eyes? skin? nose? mouth? ears? - How do bones eat? We embarked on our first research project and found out all the answers to our questions and more! We used informational books, songs and the internet to find out more about our skeletal system. What we learned: - There is blood inside blood vessels inside our bones - Bones do not have skin - There are 206 bones in adult bodies, however children often have more until they fuse together - Bones and muscles work together so we can move - The longest bone in our body is the femur - Bones protect the things inside out body like our organs The kiddos thought it would be a great idea to draw skeletons and label some of the bones that we have learned about! They did a fabulous job of drawing their skeletons and labeling them. They were quite knowledgeable when it came to naming the bones as well! I am so proud of how they turned out and so are the kids. We added a red bow for a little holiday flair!
This week we had had fun and learned a great deal while enjoying many activities stemming from the tale "The Gingerbread Man".
Initially, the kiddos were amazed to learn the written tale was in fact traditionally an oral story. It wasn't until recently (past 100 years) that individuals chose to record the tale into the written form. This understanding came as a result of noticing that instead of having an "author" on the cover, it stated, "retold by". It was interesting watching the kiddos begin to think "critically" about a story while also listening for enjoyment. Their ability to detect minute details around similarities and differences within the various versions was amazing. We also focused on "beginning, middle, end" of the story and making connections to things we already know and other books. During the week the kiddos were also presented with other learning experiences. They created gumdrop patterns, worked on story retell and the highlight of the week was decorating a life sized Gingerbread Girl cookie. There was an overwhelming amount of excitement in this morning as the kiddos were expecting a visit from Ginger the Gingerbread Girl! After recess, I announced that it was time for us to meet Ginger and decorate her. All the kiddos surrounded the table and started a countdown for our decorating party. Much to our horror, when I lifted off the cover on the cookie, our gingerbread girl was gone. In her place, she left a note telling us he did not want to be our snack. However, the gingerbread girl did leave us a clue as to where she was going. After deciphering the first clue, we headed to the library to see if we could find her. When we got to the library, we were sad to find out that we had just missed the crafty cookie, but she did leave us another note. The kiddos figured out the next clue told us that the gingerbread man was off to see our amazing Administrative Assistant, Mrs. White. Once again we missed the tricky little gal, but..... she left another note to taunt us. The note told us to look for her near the gym where they were previously having fun this morning! What luck, we just missed her again. The note she left told us to find room 18, which she said was the best in the school. We left the gym and went on a hunt around the school to find room 18. What we found was a surprise. Room 18 was OUR room. We opened the door and there, back on the table was our gingerbread girl! We sat down to finally enjoy our tasty treat. The conversations I overheard while the kiddos were eating were amazing. I loved listening to all the different theories on how our gingerbread man was able to escape. The kiddos were even making connections to some of our stories in their explanations. Last week was filled with lots of laughter and learning. Without even knowing it, the kiddos were exposed to outcomes in all of our curricular subjects. Check out all the fun we had while learning in the pictures below!! |
