On Wednesday, it was the 100th Day of School!! We are officially 100 days smarter. We have been working hard in grade one to be able to count to 100 and back down from 100. Here are some of the math centers we have been exploring to help us with these goals: 100 Licks: At this center, the kiddos write down each lick that they take of a sucker. Their goal is to see how many licks it takes for the entire sucker to disappear!! 100 cups: The kiddos are challenged to work together to create a tower using 100 cups. This is not only working on counting to 100 but it is also working on team work and following a group plan. There are many times throughout the center that the kiddos accidentally knock down the tower and have to start again. It is has been amazing watching their perserverance! 100 chart carpet: The kiddos work together to put numbers 0-100 in order on the carpet! I have seen so many strategies from different groups. Some groups have started from 0 and went on, others have delegated groups of ten to each child and others worked together to place numbers as they picked them up. Counting by 10s Ice Cream: At this center, the kiddos count the fastest way (that grade ones know) to 100. By tens! They independantly write the 10s on each scoop and then order them in order while glueing them on top of each other. 100 items find: Using a sensory bucket and a I spy sheet, the kiddos count the number of objects they are able to find out of 100 from the bin! 100 gumballs: Using two different colors, the kiddos make lines of 10 in the gumball machine all the way to 100.
It has been an exciting week in grade one with Valentines day and the 100th day of school. Due to the extra activities we had planned this week, we will post pone this weeks word work quiz until next Friday! Have a safe and family filled long weekend :) Ms. Kajati
