Our current math goal in grade one is: I can add and subtract numbers 0-5. We have learned how to do this as a whole class, now we are extending our learning by participating in math centers. Check them out!! Penny Toss: At this center, each kiddo gets a cup and 5 pennies. They put the pennies into the cup, gentle shake and then pour them onto the table. They then line them up on the five frame and count how many heads and how many tails. First they record how many heads and how many tails in the number sentence, then draw representations of the image. Number bracelets to 5: At this center, the kids get an opportunity to create a bracelet with 5 beads on it. They then use the bracelet to represent different ways of making 5. Subtraction squish: At this center, the kiddos first roll balls of playdough and put them 1-1 in the 5 frame. They then roll the dice to determine how many balls they squish. This then directly translates over into the number sentence. They write down how many they squished and then solve the sentence sentence! Subtraction bowling: At this center, the kiddos work together in a team while bowling. They set up 5 pins and take turns throwing the ball at the pins to see how many they knock down. Everyone then writes the number of pins out of 5 that they knocked down and then independently solve the math problem. Making 5: Here we cut up numbers 0-5 and practice making number sentences that add to 5. First the kiddos place it on the Make 5 mat and then glue them down onto their math notebooks.
I always encourage the kiddos to use math tools such as number lines to check their work. Parents please feel free to practice adding and subtracting numbers from 0-5 at home with everyday objects and verbal math problems!!
