Last week in grade one, we were busy learning about peace in lieu of Remembrance Day. We read, "The Peace Book" by Todd Parr and explored different ways peace can be seen, felt and shown. The kiddos took it to their own writing and wrote about what Peace means to them. Some children chose to copy the examples we came up with together and some challenged themselves to write their own thoughts! Later on in the week, we briefly discussed the wars that Canada has been involved in. We learned that long ago, Canadian soldiers faught for Canada to be a free country. We had a special visitor, Glen Kirkland, come into our classroom. We were so lucky to have him share his experience when he was deployed to Afghanistan. He explained that before they got there, the children were not allowed to go to school and often their moms were not allowed the leave the house. The grade one's listened so intently to his story and asked him very thought-provoking questions. He shared his special connection to Remembrance Day as he lost many friends due to an accident while he was in Afghanistan. He taught us that Remembrance Day is a special day where we get to remember all the people who have died in war. To wrap up our unit on Remembrance Day, we created a multi-media poppy art project where the grade one's got to experiment with mixing paint and using tissue paper and buttons to create poppies. They worked very hard on their project and it turned out beautifully!
