Last week we begun our "Objects and Materials" science unit. To kick start our learning, we gathered around a big green mat with a multitude of objects. The kiddos got a chance to explore the objects and discuss what types of materials they were made of. We learned that some objects can be made of fabric, metal, wood, plastic, rubber, and glass. After we were done exploring, we discussed characteristics such as pliable and rigid to describe objects. We then took turns playing "I spy!" where the kiddos needed to include: 1) the color and 2) the material the object was made out of. One of the kiddos pointed out that some objects are made of more than one type of material. For an example, a tennis ball might be made out of fabric and rubber. I introduced them to a special math tool called a Venn Diagram. Using the SMART board, we sorted objects that are made of plastic and wood. We will be expanding our learning by sorting our objects we brought from home to create our very own "I Spy" book!! Stay tuned for the excitement.
